STUFF YOU WILL HATE

So inspired by the Amsterdam thread, anyone been to/live in Vancouver and have any tips for someone going over there for an extended period of time. All funny stories/stereotypes also accepted.

Now, to sit back and wait while this thread dies on its arse.

What exactly do you want to do there? Touristy shit? Partying? Vancouver is a large place area-wise and the different areas are pretty diverse. If you want to chill out and relax I'd recommend Kitsalano (probably spelled wrong), and North Van if you have some money to spend. You want to stay out of East Van and Surrey as much as possible, and stay the fuck away from East Hastings (crackhead central). Places near Stanley Parka and the University of British Columbia are pretty nice in general.

Been there 2 times in the past 5 years and despite Toronto and them hating on eachother, i back Vancouver hard. Unlike other Canadian cities it is best to go in the summer because it has a lot of harbour front related attractions. Go to the Marina and see about getting a ferry over to Vancouver Island, plaace is fucking beautiful, the western end of it is actually a rainforest well on other parts of the island you can go scubba diving,whale watching or skiing.

Also the weed.British Columbia weed in general is fucking renowned and all the best dealers in Toronto most likely have some of their product brought over from B.C.

we used to call it "Hongcouver" for obvious reasons

I just read an article that says that the dating scene is tough in Vancouver.

If you want to see an atrocity exhibition, just head to the Downtown Eastside, specifically around Main and Hastings or Powell. Go during the day and you should be safe. Just heroin addicts and prostitutes too dazed to be a threat to anybody. If you want to chill on the beach, just go to Spanish Banks or English Bay. Hella attractive girls at English Bay. If you want to go hike in nature because it's neat, head to North Vancouver and check out Lynn Valley. White Rock is also a nice beach town, and Burnaby has the Metrotown shopping complex. Otherwise, there are no other cities worth visiting.

I don't know about clubs. I don't like them.

Hung out with these bros from Vancouver about 10 years ago. I think one of them is in 3 Inches of Blood now.

We're going over at the start of the summer with a kind of open working holiday visa for a year. We're looking to see what the area has going on tourist-wise,do some travelling down the west coast of the US as well and ultimately base ourselves/work in the Vancouver area for the guts of a year.

This thread has reaffirmed that I will indeed be staying the hell out of Surrey/East Hastings etc. We were hoping to end up somewhere in North Van or near enough to Stanley Park so good to hear posi stuff about those areas. Bascially I'm looking for cool stuff that wouldn't be generic tourist attractions, a heads up on the shitty areas/side of things (like I've gotten) and I'm hoping to catch a stupid amount of bands over there...

Also try going to a Canuck's game. Your gonna be in a city that recently had a full scale riot after losing to Boston in the stanley cup finals, so hockey is def gonna be thrown in your face.
