Modern hardcore recommendations?

Postby savetheskunkapes » Thu Dec 08, 2011 3:32 am

My apologies if this has been done before. I haven't really kept up with hardcore, I'm mostly a dubstep dude. The last time I was paying much attention to hardcore other than checking out the occasional local act that has a new bassist every other week or the occasional band someone would link me to was back when people were raving over Hopesfall's The Satellite Years, people were getting their panties in a wad because Poison The Well signed to Atlantic, Hatebreed were getting pretty big but weren't unanimously hated by IMNs yet because Jamey Jasta hadn't started hosting The Headbanger's Ball, Biohazard still had fans that liked them non-ironically, and old dudes in Madball shirts were wondering what the fuck these scrawny kids with floppy hair shouting about ex-girlfriends and playing melodies were doing to hardcore.

I recently checked out Harm's Way thanks to Sergeant D's post about them and I'm loving Isolation a lot. I also recently checked out some Terror songs and I'm digging them. I'm also digging Nails' latest album. I've checked out some of the srscore bands like Have Heart, La Dispute, and Touche Amore and I'm not feeling them at all. They just feel like they're trying way too hard to be meaningful and make every song sound like we're totally having a quasi-spiritual moment here. That's cool and all but I find it completely lacking in sweet-ass riffs. I'm also not feeling easycore, tr00 pop punk, or skramz. Not hating, they just don't do anything for me.

Reader's Digest Condensed Version:
  • I haven't kept tabs on hardcore for quite a while
  • Bands I checked out recently that I'm digging: Harm's Way, Terror, and Nails
  • Stuff I'm not feeling: srscore, easycore, tr00 pop punk, skramz

Well obviously, there is a pretty big range between those bands, so I'll give you a list of random names of newer bands.

Minus, Trapped Under Ice(they're pretty much Crown of Thornz), Reign Supreme, Down to Nothing, Expire, Agitator, Backtrack, Brutality Will Prevail, Rot in Hell, The Mongoloids, Kids Like Us, Cruel Hand, Death Before Dishonor, Comeback Kid, Lionheart, Take Offense, First Blood, Dead End Path, All Pigs Must Die, Hivemind, This is Hell.

OP is like my lost twin. Backing this thread's possibilities hard. Imma older dude who was big time into 80s crossover/thrash/speed dubstep and came of age in 90s hxc and fucking burned out on the idiotic, victory-recs-driven scene in the midwest about a year before I moved to Cali in 2001. Checked out many newer hardcore bands in the 00s and found little to give a fuck about* (and total shit in the bay area), and a lot of older bands getting meh, so stayed clear and rocked mostly hiphop and dubstep from about 2000-2010 and still not back up to speed.

Harm's Way and Terror: YES! will check out Nails.

*handful of bands I found interesting and still back, but not those ppl think of when they think 00s hxc like those in the recent SYWH post.

Bitter End
Minus
Expire
Soul Search
Empire of Rats
Cruel Hand
Swamps
Swamp Thing
Power Trip
Take Offense
Trapped Under Ice
Outbreak
Last Lights - legitimately love this fucking band, might b 2 srs 4 u?
Mountain Man - Last Lights minus their dead singer, still less gay than Defeater despite the sepia

Other shit I like:
Architect - angry-ass hardcore w/ mathcore-y vibes at times, super shitty mad though
Engineer - weird, more rock-ish, probably not considered hardcore, I dig it, you might dig it
Weekend Nachos - people call them powerviolence, but it's because they're probably douches, singer plays bass in Harm's Way.

I like some of the other bands listed, but I thought I'd make my list a little bit different.

If you like breakdownz check shit like Recognize, Dirty Fingers, and Nasty.

Checkin a bunch of this. Thnx. Been on that Weekend Nachos shit for a while. Empire of Rats has jamz up my way for sure: a bit faster than a lot of the modern stuff ppl are into i think. On that note, maybe the disconnect for some of us older and dubstep or 80s punk/hxc raised folks has to do with the slow mosh? Like I know how many of you all love on Acacia Strain, but I'm like good enough for a bit, but slow tempo? Fuck, I dunno. Props to you guys for the recs.

Yeah I feel you. Almost all those bands have a fair amount of fast songs, and some is basically crossover thrash like Cruel Hand, Power Trip, and Take Offense.

And, no fux given, Trash Talk put out some shit I can jam to, even if they are well on their way to being hipster scum.

I strongly recommend Most Precious Blood. Merciless was the album that brought me into "standard" hardcore, but it's a motherfucker of a record; perfect gym fuel with some actually pretty decent motivating lyrics.
